Rumballs Court / Bishops Stortford
"FORMX provided great creative insight from the outset as well as invaluable support and assistance throughout every stage of the process. Our project would not have come together as successfully without their involvement"

The Pavilion at Rumballs Court is a spacious light filled open plan living space using sliding glazed doors, natural wall and floor coverings and a courtyard to the rear of the kitchen area.

Common to many suburban properties is adequate provision of bedrooms and bathrooms, but often the ground floor living areas are constrained by compartmentalised undersized and poorly lit rooms that do not work well for the activities that are at the core of everyday living, we spend most of our living time not in the bedrooms but relaxing, playing, cooking, dining and entertaining.

The pavilion project looked to transform the ground floor of the original house combining a large part of the existing area with a new addition to give a large open plan living space while retaining two rooms for more secluded use.

A large section of the exiting ground floor external wall was removed and supported with a steel portal frame (a goal-like steel structure) concealed within the floor/ceiling void, thus allowing the new and exiting to become one seamless space.

The new build sits in a strip of land next to the existing house and up to the boundary of the adjacent property. A party wall agreement allowed the construction of a long wall with full height glazing at both ends to let light through, in addition to a large roof-light. Tucked to the rear is a new utility area with access to the enclosed courtyard. The island kitchen unit also opens to the courtyard.

The interior of the long wall is finished in clay plaster which reflects and absorbs the light in subtle variations. The floor covering is a natural sheet material (marmoleum) which is hard wearing and unifies the whole space, porcelain tiles extend the internal floor past the glazing to the garden terrace.
